I've passed occasionally, over the last month, a man without a left arm walking with traffic on the right-hand side of the 12-mile stretch of empty rural highway between the ranch where I live and the nearest town. He never turns or looks up as I pass, but I always slow down...wondering if maybe a ghost-limb has its thumb out.
