Ghosts as we understand them -- as manifestations of the deceased; they terrify me. Not as gauzy reminders that some sort of embittered identity could transcend this mortal coil, but as an intimation that the breadth of said transcendence could be limited to knocking on walls, animating squeaky old rocking-chairs, and appearing blurred and embarrassed in the background of other people's photographs.
